PCI: Smaller Merchants Threatened

October 19, 2010 – Leading the way in locking down larger merchant services, credit card processing, and merchant accounts, Payments Card Industry Security Council has been working on securing smaller “Mom and Pop” merchant accounts, which are becoming the new targets of cyber criminals, says a PCIpci expert. PCI reporting identified that merchant services, credit card processing, and merchant accounts of every size “are better at planning; not necessarily at checking if they are compliant,” says Mack, a former member of the PCI Security Standards Council. Nowadays merchant services, credit card processing, and merchant accounts payments breaches occur because of a failure to check if things were in place. “Massive amounts of merchant services, credit card processing, and merchant accounts payments data are at these merchants locations of business, and they clearly don’t have the same level of security as larger retailers do.” Additional merchant services, credit card processing, and merchant accounts education and a compliance push by the PCI Security Council include a microsite for these two groups of merchant services and a new PCI standard, which is releasing at the end of October. Above all a merchant services, credit card processing, and merchant accounts need to avoid the failure to communicate with their bank about PCI compliance. Verizon analysts were able to rank the top merchant services, credit card processing, and merchant accounts attack methods used to compromise payments card data in the report. The top attack vectors include merchant services, credit card processing, and merchant accounts malware and hacking (25 percent), SQL injections (24 percent) and exploitation of default or guessable credentials (21 percent).
