10 Ways to Prevent Identify Theft
Mobile WalletWhy You Should Care
Major mobile operators such as Blackberry, iPhone, and Android see vast possibilities and big profits in mobile payment systems. Near Field Communication technology is one of the newest technologies transforming smart phones into virtual wallets, where users pay for transactions by simply waving their phone at a terminal. The leading mobile operators are designing NFC-equipped devices; many see mobile payments skyrocketing into a highly competitive market.
SIM Card or no SIM Card?
Mobile manufacturers argue in favor of smart phone-based NFC chips, allowing a tailored payment system. Mobile operators, such as Blackberry, beg to differ as this will only place them as a carrier for the smart phone brand. Mobile operators want to see SIM-based technology, to allow greater freedom for consumers to switch between various smart phones and mobile operators. Apple is aware of the lack of an industry standard and has chosen to take a step back and observe how the technology debate evolves. The emergence of new technology can be a time and resource-consuming ordeal for any company.
Show Me the Money
Apple, the front runner with the winning formula, already has a popular global payments system in place – the iTunes Store. However Orange, T-Mobile and Barclaycard announced their partnership enabling them to draw on a wealth of experience in the contactless cards market. Similar to NFC smart phones, contactless cards allow shoppers to pay by waving their bank card against a terminal. Apple simply does not have the same level of experience with this market, especially when you consider the company’s fondness for proprietary systems. Meanwhile, Android can develop payment apps reaching to a larger customer base across multiple smart phone brands.

Accounts NTC Texas Accounts Ask the Expert Ask a Question openmoves Ask the Expert Ask The Expert
Openmoves Openmoves Ask the Expert Q: Can I use someone else's merchant account to do my transactions?
A. No. This is an illegal practice known as "money laundering" or "factoring." Using someone else's merchant account for your credit card transactions can lead to heavy fines and loss of the ability to accept credit cards in the future.

Q: As a business owner, can I run my own personal credit card through the business merchant account to have money deposited into my account?
A. No, your merchant account will be terminated due to fraudulent activity. No actual products and/or services are being acquired, which goes against Visa and MasterCard regulations.

New rules for debit card processing feesNew Rules for Debit Card
Processing Fees

In an effort to balance the debit card processing industry and put more power back into the hands of business owners, new laws have been passed that adjust debit card processing fees. The most noteworthy at the moment being the Dodd-Frank Act, which limits debit interchange fees.

This sweeping new Dodd-Frank Act plans to cut the average interchange fee (paid by merchants when consumers swipe their debit cards at stores) to 12 cents per transaction from 44 cents. Merchants have argued that they need relief from being squeezed by the banks into paying high rates, but the rule’s opponents say the government shouldn’t interfere in the market and that banks will have to impose new fees on consumers to cover their costs. Bills have been introduced to delay the rule, and the Fed recently said that it won’t be able to meet its April 21, 2011 deadline to issue a final rule.

Pay-at-the-pump Gas Stations
The theft of credit card information has typically been associated with ATM machines. Now a new trend is emerging with pay-at-the-pump gas stations as the target. We can expect these skimming incidents to grow rapidly in 2011.

To prevent you from being a target, shield your PIN entry when at the gas pump; do not let anyone see your credit or debit card. Thoroughly observe for any wires attached to the card reader. Be aware of any parked cars in the vicinity of gas pumps. There may be someone working on a computer transferring your funds as you pump gas.
